DIY Board & Batten Wall

After creating the half board & batten accent wall in our entryway last week and seeing how nicely it turned out, I knew I had to try board & batten again somewhere else! And since our kitchen will be finished in a few weeks I figured, why not do the board & batten on the main wall in the living room? Now we can stare at a gorgeous accent wall while we cook.

Materials:

5-10 MDF Boards / Caulk / Paint

Tools:

Miter Saw / Brad Nailer / Sander /

The living room wall is a little over 13 foot wide and 9 foot tall, so we opted to start with the vertical boards first. This meant we could use most of our 12’ board and wouldn’t have to splice two boards together. We measured the entire wall and divided by the amount of boards we wanted, giving us our on center distance. Measure as many times as you need to make sure the spacing is right before nailing to the wall. Also, make sure that these boards are extremely straight (use your level!).

Once those boards were in place we measured for the boards in between and cut a bunch at once. We placed the first horizontal boards along the ceiling and then calculated the spacing using the distance from the bottom of the ceiling board to the top of the trim board.

Once all the trim pieces were in place we caulked everything. All of the edges, nail holes, and seams. This was the most tedious part but is definitely worth it. *Dan still has to sand some of the seams and caulk but he’s busy with the kitchen remodel so it will have to wait.

Once the caulk had dried we painted everything the same color as the wall. And done. The entire wall, start to finish (including buying the trim) took less than 8 hours. I think it made a huge impact on this wall and is exactly what I was looking for to complete our living room!

Will you try a board & batten wall? Let me know if you have any questions!
